Congressman Cannon believes taxes are too high, the tax code is too complex, and the government does not have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem. One of the issues that we can tackle now is dscriminatory taxation.

Discriminatory taxation means that one good or service is taxed at a different rate than the same good or service, in the same location, for reasons of geography, preference, or other criteria outside of the control of business.

- One of the most egregious is one Congressman Cannon has taken head on. Currently, some states assess discriminatory taxes on natural gas pipelines that are higher than those on other local commercial and industrial property in the same area. In essence, natural gas pipelines traveling through a state are assessed, for property tax purposes, at a higher rate than pipeline that orginate or are otherwise run by an in state company. This is not only a Constitutional issue, but it is a market fairness issue.
- Historically, Congress has prohibited unfair practices that unreasonably burden or discriminate against Interstate Commerce and transportation, including the “4 R” Act (1976), the Airport and Airways Improvement Act (1978), the Motor Carrier Act (1980) and the Bus Regulatory Reform Act (1982).

Congressman Cannon has spent years fighting to end discriminatory taxes. As a believer in the free market and consistently rated by the non-partisan National Journal as one of the most fiscally conservative members of the US House, Congressman Cannon has made tax fairness a top priority.
He most recently sponsored HR 2230 (See Full Bill Text Here) to prevent certain discriminatory taxation of natural gas pipeline property. He has also co-sponsored legislation to prevent discriminatory taxation on car rentals for consumers, Social Security benefits, and others.
Congressman Cannon is a recognized leader on the issue of fiscal responsibility and tax fairness. He was most recently awarded the "Taxpayer's Friend" Award by the National Taxpayers Union.
Most recently, USA Today recognized the need for this legislation in an Op Ed. To read the Op Ed, please click here.
